East Boston, otherwise known as Eastie, is located across the water from Boston’s financial district and historic North End. The area has been a destination for immigrants for a long time, which has resulted in a community with high amounts of diversity, with about fifty percent of the population being foreign born. The area has recently seen its share of gentrification, with many young professionals choosing to live there with an easy commute to downtown Boston.
Many residents are concerned with rising rents and a lack of affordable housing. Another cause for concern from residents is crime and alleged gang-related violence in the area. Is the neighborhood age friendly? There are certainly adequate provisions to allow one to have access to the things they need to age comfortably. A convenient public transportation system is vital for senior citizens in the area since the traffic in the area is heavy and the driving is difficult. Right in the center of East Boston sits Maverick Square, which has a MBTA Blue line stop, allowing for easy access to all areas of downtown Boston. In the same square sits a bus stop, which residents say makes going to nearby towns for shopping and leisure very easy.
Logan airport is located right next to East Boston which makes it an easy commute for those looking to get away. East Boston provides easy access to healthcare for senior citizens. There is a Neighborhood Health Center in East Boston which provides the elderly with a great foundation of care, including meals on wheels, transportation to appointments, and hospital quality care. A unique part of East Boston healthcare is the PACE (Program For All Inclusive Care of the Elderly) program offered by the Neighborhood Health Center. East Boston is one of the few Boston neighborhoods that offers this program, and it is nationally recognized as one of the best healthcare plans available for the elderly or disabled.
