San Diego can be a desirable place for older adults to live due to several factors. Here are some reasons why it may be a good town for older adults:

  2. Healthcare: San Diego has a robust healthcare system with numerous hospitals, medical centers, and specialized healthcare providers. The city offers a wide range of healthcare services, including geriatric care. Access to quality healthcare can be a significant advantage for older adults.

Cost of living to high for retirees. COL $80,000 most retirees I know are living on 50k or less. Housing is way overpriced and taxes are too high in this state unless you are an illegal alien and not paying taxes. Politicians favor illegals over citizens. People are leaving state due to politicians.

San Diego is a great retirement city. For starters, the weather is mild year around. Health care gets high marks and while the county is quite spread out, public transportation is extremely senior-friendly. A bus or trolley pass for the entire month is only $18. While there is an endless list of volunteer opportunities, the job market for seniors is limited. Because San Diego attracts millions of tourists each year, there is a huge variety of restaurants and theme parks. There is also a dozen Native American operated Las Vegas style casinos. Crime is low for a large city and while the cost of living is high, it's lower than other California cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Between the Military, and soo many Colleges and Universities in San Diego, it is a very educated and young town. Most employers want someone with a degree, or someone with a military background with security clearance to work in the Defense industries. Ever since I've turned 50 I am shut out of most jobs except for menial task labor.

Even the weather has gotten more rowdy and is difficult in its extremes. Since moving here in 2001, the population and traffic everywhere has more than doubled. To avoid the hassles, working online is the only viable opportunity for those over 65, if anyone will hire you. Bus and trolley transportation is slow but usually consistent. Parking is difficult and expensive. Mostly outsiders have moved here and don't appreciate the California culture. Enough said.

California is one of the highest taxed states in the union. You can't beat the weather and general living conditions. Unfortunately housing costs are high, and seniors are pressed for low home prices. There are many senior communities that cater to mature people. San Diego has numerous care facilities and they are located close to senior communities. There is ample transportation with the Metro lines (bus) and HOV lanes, plus most venues are not more than 20 minutes riding time. There are several U of C campuses plus San Diego State College and numerous JC's. However the job market is questionable. With the great influx of unskilled labor, it becomes a problem finding jobs that don't require anything but labor. Skilled and professional jobs especially in the medical fields are becoming more available as the medical services sector tend to expand. There's plenty of senior programs available, and they can be easily found on the internet.
