Mesa ( MAY-sə) is a city in Maricopa County, in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is a suburb located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Phoenix. Mesa is the central city of the East Valley section of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. It is bordered by Tempe on the west, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community on the north, Chandler and Gilbert on the south along with Queen Creek, and Apache Junction on the east.
Mesa is the third-largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson, and the 38th-largest city in the US. The city is home to 439,041 people as of 2010 according to the Census Bureau. Mesa is home to numerous higher education facilities including the Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University.

There are many senior citizens in the area considering Leisure World is nearby and there are local buses that have connections to the light rail or other buses that can get you to places like Chandler,Phoenix,Scottsdale and Tempe.There are 4 major grocery shopping stores(Albertsons,Fry's,Safeway and Winco)There is a Target and a Walmart,for medical needs there is a Banner Baywood,also for the Superstition Springs Mall is nearby.For the people that like to save money there is the Dollar Tree and 99cents only.For the people that like thrift stores,there is a Goodwill and Savers.Anymore questions on what is available in the area please feel free to contact me [email protected] or (480)936-8049

Sunland Village is a 55+ community, therefore age friendly.

Many people retire and live in Mesa or other parts of the East Valley. There is a large number of hospitals, medical centers, specialists, and general practitioners here, primarily due to the "Winter Visitors" that come down here from the northern US and Canada during our winters. Many of these visitors take care of their medical issues while here.

On the other hand, this is an extremely hot climate, not well suited for many elderly visitors. Public transportation is sporadic. You really need a car, expecially in the summer.
