Claimed city
Springfield is a city in western New England, and the seat of Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. Springfield sits on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River near its confluence with three rivers: the western Westfield River, the eastern Chicopee River, and the eastern Mill River.
Springfield is an emerging age friendly community. This means it is pursuing an age friendly designation. The basic premise and purpose of the Council on Aging (COA) is to improve and enhance life quality for elder residents by striving to ensure that all elder residents are afforded the opportunity to live a lifestyle based on independence, and to mature with dignity and security.
To accomplish this, it is the function of the COA to advocate, plan, develop, coordinate and operate various social services for Springfield's elder citizens. It serves as the primary vehicle for providing information and referral services for seniors in the Springfield area. Programs include:
- SCSEP Program: Created in 1965, SCSEP is the nation’s oldest program to help low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55+ find work. SCSEP matches eligible older adults with part-time jobs for community service organizations.
- SHINE Program: The SHINE Program provides free and unbiased health information, counseling, and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries of all ages and their caregivers.
- Computer Learning Club: The Computer Learning Center teaches seniors (age 50 plus) to use computers, the Internet and technology.
