Charleston is the capital of the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is also the county seat of Kanawha County. The city is located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers. As of the 2013 Census Estimate, it had a population of 50,821, making it the most populous city in the state, while its metropolitan area had 224,743 residents. It is a center of government, commerce, and industry. Early industries important to Charleston included salt and the first natural gas well.
