I highly recommend South Portland as a friendly, safe, and welcoming place to live! My neighborhood, Thornton Heights, combines traditional, long-established, well-maintained neighborhoods with modern convenience. I have felt very safe living here for 3-1/2 years. We have two large apartment complexes devoted to seniors and those with disabilities, both owned and managed by the local housing authority. The bus service is convenient, with friendly drivers and stops close to most businesses and homes. We also have an elementary and middle school in the neighborhood, as well as a public library, and active children add to the vibrant atmosphere. For recreation, we have a municipal golf course in this neighborhood that is popular with residents and visitors, and it connects to woodland walking trails for the public. All modern conveniences are within walking or a short driving distance, including gas stations, car washes, a drug store, and restaurants offering various types of cuisine including Italian, Chinese, and seafood. The Maine Mall is a short drive from here and if I'm ambitious and want to skip driving, I can walk there in 30 minutes!
