Air quality is not good, in the EPA Air Quality Index range of 51 to 100, and the AQI is often over 75, in the 80's of that range. I can detect the pollution in my breathing and lungs and sinuses. The city is in a state of decay; was no doubt once magnificent as the many old structures and mansions date back to the 19th or turn of the 20th century evince. Some are kept in a pristine state, many others suffer the ravages of time and neglect, the latter having to do with lack of money. There are reportedly 43 industries in Keokuk, and some are the cause of the poor air quality. The population is not highly educated, rather marginally, living day to day in a low skilled wage environment. This is a generality. Any contractor services like plumbing, electrical, roofing and so on, will cost a fortune. Plenty of bars and fast food places, small businesses of every conceivable type, but virtually no medical providers, though a clinic is scheduled to open in late 2024. Taxes are inordinately high, and you will need auto insurance to drive a moped. A lot of old architecture in this city, and tugboats pushing barges on the Mississippi, trains wailing through every hour it seems, but cultural life and events are next to nil. I did hear here, for the first time, something that seemed like country Rap in a park, where restroom doors are kept locked by the city, for reason unknown. Saw a woman and little girl thus denied access, and I wondered what possible motive for this could be; left message for Chief of Police regarding the same.
