Salem is a historic coastal city in Essex County, Massachusetts, located in the North Shore region. It is a New England bedrock of history and is considered one of the most significant seaports in Puritan American history. The Salem Council on Aging was founded in October of 1967 to serve the needs of Salem's aging community. It now serves more than 2,000 individuals annually, providing a variety of services, including but not limited to: music programs, special events, exercise classes, sight seeing trips, museum tours, book clubs, in- and out-of-town trips, social services, home-delivered meals and daily hot lunches, and overall support services to ensure that all seniors can maximize the quality of their lives. Other services include:
- TRIAD Council: The purpose of the Salem TRIAD Council is to develop and implement policies and programs that will promote crime prevention, reduce criminal victimization of senior citizens, promote safety awareness and serve the special needs of the Senior Community.
- Nutrition: Hot, nutritional lunches are available Monday through Friday, 11 a.m., at the Senior Center, with a two-day prior reservation. Home-delivered meals are also offered to homebound elders (confined to their homes by health problems). A donation is suggested to defray the cost of the meals.
- Social Services: Our social services department provides a broad array of counseling, support services including information on topics such as Medicare, Social Security, care needs, housing, information and referral and identifying other resources in the community to support seniors.
