Many Fredericksburg-area residents commute to work by car, bus, and rail to Washington and Richmond, as well as Fairfax, Prince William, and Arlington counties.

Fredericksburg works for people fifty and over in many ways. There are many new communities throughout the area for this demographic providing extensive social networking events. The University of Mary Washington holds monthly free events at Dodd Auditorium, in person and live streamed, bringing expert lecturers from all over the world presenting talks because Great Lives Matter. Downtown Fredericksburg has a historic feel that is steadfastly defended by an active city council that prevents over-development. Monthly free walking tours promote the work of local artists attracting all age groups downtown.
