The private sector workforce is age unfriendly, primarily due to a desire to seek less experienced, therefore younger employees, to pay less. On the other hand, the government tends to be age friendly, enacting real property discounts for seniors and allotting a rather healthy Office of Aging budget.

How did Washington earn the grade of B? We examined the state taxes based on how age friendly they are. Washington has a state sales tax of 6.50%. Of particular interest is that Washington does not have taxes on social security. There are estate taxes. There are no taxes imposed on inheritance. Washington has an effective property tax rate of 1.06%. Weighing these taxes and other taxes most likely to impact the aging population is how Washington earned its state tax grade of B.
