Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles and known colloquially by its initials LA, is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the largest and most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California.


City of Los Angeles Department of Aging provides community based services to seniors and their caregivers to ensure the highest quality of life as possible and remain in the community. There are 16 MPC throughout the City of Los Angeles. These centers serve as community focal points for senior services.

  1. Services provided at each MPC include In-Home Assistance and Services, Care Management, Legal Assistance, Nutrition Services, Home Delivered Meals, Transportation, Paratransit, Health Education and Screening Services
  2. Information and Assistance: Information and Assistance provides seniors and caregivers with information about available community resources and/or referrals to particular service programs or agencies.

How did California earn the grade of C? We examined the state taxes based on how age friendly they are. California has a state sales tax of 7.25%. Of particular interest is that California does not have taxes on social security. There are no estate taxes. There are no taxes imposed on inheritance. California has an effective property tax rate of 0.79%. Weighing these taxes and other taxes most likely to impact the aging population is how California earned its state tax grade of C.

Area is very car dependent, which can be pricey for seniors on fixed income, and public transportation is not great in most areas of town; because of dense population there are a number of community engagement opportunities; West LA College and Santa Monica College are nearby community colleges, though they still require transportation, so difficult to access without car or funds for car service.
