Arlington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, six miles (10 km) northwest of Boston. The population was 42,844 at the 2010 census.

The mission of the Council on Aging (COA) is to provide advocacy, support services, and programs to help Arlington elders live dignified and independent lives. The Council’s primary responsibilities are to design, promote, and implement services to address the identified needs of the community’s elder population and to coordinate existing services in the community.

Programs and Services: The council on aging assists seniors with services such as nursing/health services, podiatry, blood pressure screenings, and access to medical equipment.

LINKS Program: The LINKS Program (Linking Neighborhood Kids with Senior citizens) matches students from the Ottoson Middle School with seniors who need help with outside chores such as leaf raking, yard or garage clean-up, weeding, planting, moving trash to the curb, etc.

Arlington is an emerging age friendly community. This means it is pursuing an age friendly designation.

There are busses and access to the subway (Alewife) by bus but the service is not what it used to be. There are not enough apt buildings with elevators to accommodate the elderly and those with disabilities. There is not enough affordable living as a whole...for those still working and those who are retired. In the winter months, snow removal is less than ideal and can be especially problematic at bus stops where the elderly and disabled population wait for busses in the cold.

Arlington is a safe and age friendly town. Public transport is easily accessible to and from surrounding cities. Most of the residents are very educated. It has a few assisted living facilities and health services centets

Arlington Heights is a very age friendly community. It is extremely safe with little crime and a comfortability walking anytime of day. The Minuteman Bike Trail provides a smooth and even walkway for any age and walking ability. It is a beautiful path to use to loop around waterways, get to restaurants and stores, and again, is very safe to travel on. The Heights, like the Town Center, and East Arlington, is dissected the entire length of the town, from Cambridge to Lexington, by Massachusetts Avenue. You can find myriad shops, restaurants, markets, hair salons, pharmacies, medical care, postal facilities, and places of worship along the entire length. There is an MBTA bus route with a multitude of stops to throughout Arlington and beyond, including the MBTA redline just over the line in Cambridge. There are lakes and ponds, many parks and green spaces, a farmers' market during the warm months, and the spacious and friendly Robbins Library. There is a thriving retirement facility in the Heights catering to the older population who may need round the clock care and is just steps away fromTrader Joe's and Walgreens. Arlington is a friendly, extremely safe, and very walkable community with lots to do and just minutes from the cities of Cambridge and Boston. It is definitely an age friendly community.
