Archer is a great town to live in as an older person. I have never felt that my age mattered doing business there. However, while at UF Health at Shands, I often felt discriminated by my co-workers because of my age. My first position there was especially difficult since I was an older nurse on a predominately young RN staffed unit. Another young nurse who started the same time as I did was accepted immediately by the RN's but my experience was the opposite. It was much better on my next unit, as they had a lot of veteran nurses already on the unit. As the older nurses retired and more young nurses were hired, I became more discriminated against because of my age. The patients never treated me poorly because of my age, in fact quite the opposite. They almost always showed me respect, often as soon as I came in their room just because I was older.
